Collections on Your Report: What You Can and Cannot Dispute

Your rights with collection accounts, and the limits.

Collection accounts are among the most damaging items on a report — and among the most error-prone. Here’s where your rights apply.

You can dispute

  • Collections that aren’t yours
  • Wrong balances or dates
  • Duplicate entries for the same debt
  • Collections past the 7-year reporting period
  • Paid collections still showing a balance

You can request validation

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you can ask a collector to validate a debt. Do it in writing, ideally within 30 days of first contact.

What you generally can’t do

Remove an accurate, verifiable collection that’s within its reporting period just by disputing it. Repeated frivolous disputes can be rejected.

Strategy for accurate collections

Paying, settling or negotiating with the collector can still help — especially with newer scoring models that treat paid collections more favorably. That’s the ‘strategy required’ path in Phase 1 of the $1M Playbook.
